M81 - Spiral Galaxy in Ursa Major

Copyright 2008 John Hodge

M81, also known as Bode's Galaxy, is one of the brighter galaxies available to amateur astronomers.  It has a relatively close neighbor, spiral galaxy M82, at a distance of only 150,000 light years.  The pair makes an awe inspiring site in even small telescopes.

M81 is 12 million light years distant from Earth.
