Hap Griffin's Equipment

The imaging setup as of May 2008.  In the interest of maximum versatility of focal length selection, the rig consists of three telescopes which can all be used for imaging or autoguiding...depending on the apparent size of the target selected.  At the low end of the focal length range, a Takahashi FS102-NSV APO Refractor is used with a focal length of 816mm (102mm aperture at f8).  A William Optics 0.8 focal reducer brings this down to 653mm when needed.  For medium focal lengths, an Orion 10" f4.7 Newtonian (FL 1200mm) is used with a Baader MPCC Coma Corrector.  The Orion has been customized with an Orion Accufocus motor, a dew heater for the secondary mirror, a fan for the primary mirror, and a custom light shroud for the rear of the scope.  For long focal length imaging, a Celestron C-11 SCT with a carbon fiber tube is used.  It has a custom mirror lock and a Feathertouch focuser.

The imaging camera is a Canon 40D modified by Hap for increased hydrogen-alpha sensitivity.  The autoguider is an SBIG ST-402 with a Baader UV-IR blocking filter.
Details of the side-by-side mounting arrangement.  The two main scopes are both mounted on a 16" x 20" plate of 1/2" aluminum.  The Newtonian is mounted in a set of 12" Parallax rings and the C-11 is mounted on a 16" AP saddleplate.  The SBIG ST-402 CCD camera used for autoguiding can be seen attached to the 10" Newtonian scope.
The imaging camera is a modified Canon 40D.  Information on DSLR modifications can be found at www.hapg.org.

An Orion motor drive has been added to the focuser on the Newtonian to remote the focusing operation.
